With a rising population and pollution, coupled with 3 years of the pandemic, the cost of healthcare is increasing every year adding to the woes of people who have not been able to save enough for their retirement. We can go on and on about how the government is not doing enough, how industries are heavily polluting our environment, and how we are destroying the green cover and turning our earth into a wasteland by using non-degradable products. These are really issues of grave concern and need to be addressed and it can’t be done without our involvement. Borrowing the dialogue from the famous movie Jab We Met- “we are part of the crowd and we are the ones complaining about the crowd”. We know the problem and solution too. But the change in behavior of human society is not going to happen overnight and these talks provide no comfort to the ones who are suffering from a disease or accident. So for a change let us discuss something different that might help everyone “Now”.
Is it possible to heal one’s body without any medication? We all know the body has the intelligence to heal and repair on its own. We don’t always run to doctors for minor injuries or sickness. But can we recover from a chronic illness without any medicine? I am not referring to Ayurveda, which although is dismissed by western world as pseudo-science, nevertheless has a strong belief system in India. I have never understood the logic of why or how western medicine which contains high amounts of chemicals some of which are potentially dangerous to the human body is better than Ayurvedic medicine which is derived primarily from plant sources. But that is a debate for another time. Let us focus on what information we have on if without any medicine our body has the ability to heal itself or not. Please bear in mind that I am not a scientist and I am not suggesting anyone stop going to the doctor or take medicine. My objective is simply to gather the knowledge and present it in a logical format so that we understand that we can try something in parallel without any side effects in conjunction with whatever treatment we are following prescribed by our doctors.
Traditionally in Vedic civilization chanting mantras has been one way of healing your body. There are numerous mantras that are used to cure illness the primary being the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra. I am not sure about others, but when I hear the Sanskrit slokas, I definitely feel a surge of energy. Interestingly my mother being a very religious person used to always play the Vedic mantras on a tape recorder and it actually irritated me as a kid. What I have understood is, that the mind has an immense impact on the healing capabilities of a body. Everything starts from belief. If you believe that mantras can heal you or have a positive effect on your life, they certainly will. Now you may argue, that it is just the placebo effect. If a doctor passes off a sugar pill as a drug, it will have a similar effect. So what is so special effect of a mantra? To forward this conversation, let us first understand what our body is made of? For a long time, we believed our body is made of matter, to be more precise 30 trillion cells. Cells in turn are composed of DNA and DNA of atoms. But what do atoms contain? Quarks, Gluons, and electrons. It’s now proven that 99 percent of the atom is actually empty. All of these sub-atomic particles exhibit the property of waves and are constantly in motion. So we are really a collage of these subatomic particles held together by adhesive force and less solid than we believe. What is interesting to know is that we have a wavelength and each cell is constantly in vibration. Our brain is the center of the electromagnetic and quantum fields. All these have already been proven by scientists. 100 years ago, if someone would have proposed that you can heal your body through sound, he would either have been labeled as mad or a victim of religious dogma. But with the invention of ultrasound, which is used to cure diseases like Parkinson’s and tumors, it is no longer considered impossible. Haven’t sound been always used in our civilization to cure diseases? We all know Sanskrit is called the language of sounds. It is possible when we invoke these mantras, cells in our body vibrate with a particular frequency thereby removing blockages and enabling the energy to flow more freely. The best is we can try them along with our regular medication without any side effects.
Similar to sound, healing through touch is another practice that has been there in our civilization for ages. This is however accepted more in the scientific community. Physiotherapy and acupressure are two important methods of healing through touch. Massage therapy and yoga are also proven techniques to bring relaxation to your body. Whereas it is an established fact yoga originated in India, It is debatable whether acupressure originated in India or China. There are references for acupressure in Sushruta Samhita and it is possible it traveled to China through the spread of Buddhism. The reason touch theory is not viewed with skepticism is because of the fact it brings instant relaxation. On the contrary, the power of meditation or mantras has not been proven yet. The onus lies on Indian researchers to explore the possibilities.
Pranayama is another technique used in ancient India to cure illness. They regulate our heartbeat and secretion of insulin, relax our muscles and increase metabolism thereby keeping diabetes and high blood pressure in control. In this case, regulating airflow in our body is used as a healing technique.
The Vedas state our body is made of five elements: earth, water, fire, air, and space. An imbalance in any of these elements can cause diseases. Interestingly each of these elements can be used to cure our body: Ayurveda by regulating food habits (all food comes from earth), saline solution (water) to treat diarrhea, heat therapy like Hyperthermia (fire), prayanam for high blood pressure and acupuncture (air) for sciatica, vibration therapy for joint pain, and ultrasound (space) for tumor. Perhaps in the future, enough progress would be made in medical science that will only use these five elements to heal our body without the high dose of antibiotics and other pills whose side effects are clearly established. For now, we have no choice but to go with whatever medical treatment is available to us!
